What is WebP? Will WebP kill the JPEG star?

October 4th, 2010 · 1 Comment

WebP (pronounced as “weppy”) is the new photo format under development by Google. It is said to reduce file size by 40% compared to JPEGs. Google is working hard to make this the new standard. The goal is simple – to make the web faster. This will make a big impact on how we designers work. We can produce better looking images that loads faster. :)

If that happens, we’ll have a faster web experience, reduced bandwidth and hosting costs.  I can also store 40% more pics in my sdcard now! :P
