The Benefits of Web Standards

April 2nd, 2008 · 9 Comments ·

Today, I want to share with you some of the great things about having a standards compliant website and why you too should start using it.

Search engine friendly, increased traffic

This is one very important reason to practice web standards. Search engines such as Google are blind user. It doesn’t care about the design. It cannot tell if it’s a heading just because you set the page heading to font size of 20px to make it larger.

In a standards compliant website, the design is separated from content. The HTML holds the contents while visual presentation is controlled by CSS. The HTML uses a semantic code. A semantically structured website uses the right tag to describe the contents within it. So if something is a heading, instead of using font size=20px, wrap it with heading tags such as H1, H2, H3 and so on. e.g., <h2>The Benefits of Web Standards</h2>

By describing your contents properly, the more Google will understand what your site is all about and improve your ranking which will lead to an increased traffic.

Tableless

Less bandwidth, loads faster

By removing the visual presentation markup from HTML and moving it to CSS, means that your HTML page size is smaller and thus it loads faster. We should keep in mind that there are still lots of dial-up users out there. And we can’t just ignore them. Slow loading sites are so boring and annoying. The tendency is your visitors will leave your website and you lose a business.

How to add Twitter on your blog

February 23rd, 2008 · 13 Comments ·

People have been asking me how on earth did I manage to integrate my Twitter feeds on my blog. It’s really simple..I used a plugin called Twitter Tools.

Twitter Tools is a WordPress plugin created by Alex King that lets you create a complete integration of your WordPress blog and Twitter account.

With Twitter Tools you can:

  • Archive your tweets
  • Create a blog post from each of your tweets
  • Create a tweet on Twitter whenever you post in your blog, with a link to the blog post
  • Post a tweet from your sidebar
  • Create a daily digest post of your tweets
  • Post a tweet from the WP Admin screens
  • Pass your tweets along to another service (e.g., Facebook)
  • You can also choose the number of tweets you want to show in the sidebar.

So, here’s how to add Twitter on your blog.

Logitech VX Revolution-mouse for graphic design

February 11th, 2008 · 8 Comments ·

About a month ago, I picked up the Logitech VX Revolution cordless laser mouse. It is the laptop version, the little brother of MX Revolution mouse for desktop. Logitech labels the MX Revolution to be “the world’s most advanced mouse” and so for the VX, it’s the ultimate laptop mouse.

Logitech VX Revolution mouse

I bought this to use with my Vostro 1700 laptop but I found my hand so comfortable with it, I’m now using it as my primary mouse for desktop. The precision is excellent. I use it a lot with graphic designing. VX Revolution is not as small as all other laptop mice but it’s not a full sized regular mouse either. Its size and ergonomic design fits nicely with my small hand.It has a lot of cool features and my favorite are:

How to be a web designer

January 12th, 2008 · 25 Comments ·

This question have been asked by my cousin who studied chemistry and now he seems to be interested in web designing. Quite a transition I thought. The first thing I could retort was “Are you creative?”. But let’s skip that. Here are the techy skills and required stuff to get started.

1. Choose a platform, PC or Mac

The never ending debate! I’m a PC user and it works fine with me. But if you are on this creative field you’ll be surrounded with Mac users who’ll sway you that Mac is a better computer for creative professionals and those who sings “Mac rocks PC sucks or Mac blings PC stinks” or whatever. Well, Mac is a pretty sweet looking machine. Leopard, the latest operating system of Mac has a lot of cool features too. So it’s really tempting to choose it over PC. However, Mac is a lot more expensive than PC. Although if Mac are not like 5x more expensive in Manila than in US, I’d definitely splurge on it. My 2 cents is, PC or Mac, it’s up to you. It’s just a matter of preference. At the end of the day, it’s your design that will be judge, not your equipment. :)
